Egypt plans to connect 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy to the unified electricity grid in 2026, enhancing the sustainability and stability of the national electricity system. Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat said on Wednesday during a meeting with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, and Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi.
The meeting reviewed ongoing projects in wind and solar energy, battery storage systems, and additional capacities already contracted or under negotiation, in line with the 2030 Energy Strategy, to meet growing energy demand and maintain grid stability.
Minister Esmat highlighted efforts to improve production efficiency, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and achieve a balanced energy mix, aiming for renewable sources to cover at least 42 per cent of national energy needs by 2030.
Meanwhile, Minister of Petroleum Karim Badawi outlined measures to settle company arrears by June 2026, recent discoveries, the addition of oil and gas reserves, the 2026 drilling plan, and initiatives to rationalise the consumption of petroleum products and natural gas.
President El-Sisi emphasised the need for a measured expansion of renewable energy projects, reducing dependence on conventional fuels, and creating a balanced energy mix to position Egypt as a leading regional hub for green energy. He also directed coordination between the Ministries of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Resources, and Finance to accelerate clean energy integration and secure funding for grid stability and optimal resource use.
The President additionally followed up on regional developments, stressing electricity supply security, uninterrupted access for all uses, industrial energy efficiency, the summer action plan, and preparations to manage peak loads and rising consumption.
