Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk on Monday met with head of Russia’s Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing Anna Popova on the sidelines of UNCTAD meetings in Geneva.
The two sides discussed potential cooperation in food safety, consumer protection, and emergency preparedness. Farouk expressed interest in Russia’s digital systems for monitoring product quality and combating fraud, including its advanced traceability platform that tracks food items from source to consumer.
Discussions also covered Russia’s smart labelling system and surprise inspection model, which enhances regulatory oversight across food outlets and storage facilities. Egypt is considering developing a similar digital gateway under the supervision of the Ministry of Supply.
Both sides agreed to explore a technical cooperation protocol focusing on digital market surveillance, electronic traceability, food safety inspections, and joint training workshops.
The initiative aligns with Egypt’s strategy to strengthen food security systems and regulatory frameworks to protect consumers and improve supply chain performance amid growing global challenges.
