Egypt, Port of Antwerp explore collaboration on trade, green energy

Egypt is exploring closer ties with Belgium’s Port of Antwerp, Europe’s second-largest port, to boost maritime cooperation. Egypt’s Ambassador to Belgium Ahmed Abu Zeid, accompanied by Rasha Galal, head of the Commercial Office at the Egyptian Embassy, held talks with the port’s Director Christophe Waterschoot.

Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in port development, maritime transport, and logistics, including the Jarjoub green hydrogen project in western Egypt, intended for export to Europe. Abu Zeid, during his tour in the port, highlighted Egypt’s efforts to modernise its maritime sector and port infrastructure, and highlighting its strategy to become a regional trade and logistics hub, emphasising green transformation and renewable energy.

The two sides explored leveraging Belgian expertise in port management, advanced technologies, and river transport to enhance Egypt’s global competitiveness. Waterschoot expressed strong interest in strengthening ties, praising Egypt’s port development and exploring joint investment opportunities. The visit underscores efforts to expand economic cooperation between Egypt and Belgium, capitalising on Antwerp’s expertise to unlock investment and knowledge sharing in the maritime sector.
