Egypt will begin the second phase of its universal health insurance system in September, starting with Matrouh Governorate, with upgrades to hospitals and clinics under way across several provinces, the head of the Healthcare Authority (EHA) said Thursday.
Ahmed El-Sobky said in a statement after a meeting with senior officials that the trial rollout will see all newly built or renovated facilities under the presidential Hayah Kareema (Decent Life) Initiative integrated into the system. “These facilities will be a cornerstone in achieving universal health coverage, especially in rural and remote areas,” he said.
He directed the swift completion of infrastructure works, digital transformation systems and safety standards at health facilities in Matrouh before the launch. Preparations are also being stepped up to equip hospitals and primary care units in North Sinai, Minya, Kafr El-Sheikh and Damietta to join the programme during the second phase.
El-Sobky said the authority is implementing a flexible coverage model tailored to the geographic and social needs of each governorate, aiming for equitable access to quality, sustainable healthcare.
