Egypt proposes regional media code to curb disparaging coverage
Egypt is pushing for a unified Arab media code of conduct to prevent coverage it views as offensive to Arab states, Minister of State for Media Diaa Rashwan said Thursday, as regional tensions continue to shape public narratives.
Speaking at a press conference, Rashwan said the initiative is intended to safeguard the image of the Arab world through a coordinated regulatory framework.
Rashwan said Egypt would call for an emergency meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers of Information after ongoing negotiations conclude to adopt a common strategy for handling regional crises.
“The Ministry of State for Media will request an urgent meeting… to implement a media code of conduct prohibiting offenses against Arab states,” he said, adding that the rules would apply both in Egypt and across the wider Arab region.
He said the proposal also seeks to establish mechanisms to counter what he described as media defamation and to improve coordination in responding to regional developments.
