Egypt pushes labour reforms, skills development in talks with ILO

Egypt’s Labour Minister Mohamed Gobran met with Eric Oechslin, Director of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Cairo office on Thursday to strengthen cooperation on shared priorities, including the country’s National Employment Strategy.

The meeting focused on expanding joint efforts to improve the work environment, enhance youth skills, and raise employment rates. The officials also discussed the development of a National Occupational Safety and Health Strategy, part of Egypt’s broader plan to modernise its labour system.

Gobran highlighted the ministry’s ongoing implementation of the new Labour Law and said executive regulations are nearly finalised to ensure stronger protection for workers and employers. He also called for monthly meetings of the joint coordination committee with the ILO to monitor progress on technical cooperation programs and accelerate shared initiatives.

Oechslin praised recent reforms in Egypt’s labour sector, including improved workplace standards, inspections, and occupational safety measures. He reaffirmed the ILO’s commitment to providing technical support and implementing joint programmes aligned with Egypt’s employment priorities.

Both sides agreed to continue coordination, develop joint work programmes, and launch initiatives aimed at expanding job opportunities for youth, supporting capacity building, and improving the quality of the Egyptian labour market in line with the country’s economic and human development goals.
