Egypt will raise wages for state employees from July at a total cost exceeding 100 billion Egyptian pounds, increasing the minimum monthly income to 8,000 pounds, Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said on Wednesday.
Employees subject to the civil service law will receive a 12 per cent annual raise, while those outside the law will get a 15 per cent increase, Kouchouk said. All state workers will also receive an additional monthly incentive of 750 pounds, at a total cost of 77.5 billion pounds.
Teachers in pre-university education and Al-Azhar institutions will receive an additional monthly teaching allowance of 1,000 pounds starting from the new academic year, while high-performing school administrations will be granted a 2,000-pound monthly incentive, at a combined cost of 14 billion pounds.
Workers in the healthcare sector will receive a 750-pound monthly increase, alongside a 25 per cent rise in overnight and on-call allowances from July, costing around 8.5 billion pounds, he added.
About one million teachers and 640,000 healthcare workers are expected to benefit from the measures.
Kouchouk said the government aims to link wage increases to improvements in the quality of essential public services.
