Egypt receives final batch of cranes for Hutchison’s Sokhna terminal

Egypt’s Ministry of Industry and Transport said the heavy-lift vessel ZHEN HUA 23 arrived at Sokhna Port this week carrying three ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and six automated rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, completing deliveries for Hutchison’s Terminal 1.

The shipment brings the total to six STS cranes and 18 RTG cranes supplied for the facility, marking the end of superstructure works at the first container terminal in the Sokhna Port development project, the ministry said.

The new STS cranes can handle large-capacity vessels and speed up container turnover, while the automated RTG cranes use smart systems to reduce human error and improve stacking efficiency.

Industry and Transport Minister Kamel Al-Wazir said Terminal 1 will operate as a fully smart facility, deploying a Terminal Operating System (TOS), GPS and RFID tracking, centralised crane control, and eco-friendly systems to cut emissions and boost energy efficiency.

He added the equipment delivery paves the way for the terminal to operate at global standards, strengthen Sokhna’s capacity to handle the world’s largest shipping lines, and position Egypt as a growing hub in international supply chains.
