Egypt recycles 74% of household wastewater in ’23

Egypt treated 74 per cent of household wastewater in 2023, up from 46 per cent in 2020, surpassing the global average of 58 per cent based on UN SDG indicator 6.3.1, CAPMAS reported.

In 2022, 59.9 million cubic metres of treated sewage water were used to irrigate forested areas covering 6.5 thousand acres. Sohag Governorate accounted for the largest share, with 3.2 thousand acres, representing 48.9 per cent of the total area.

The total groundwater quantity in 2023 was 9.09 billion cubic metres, representing 11.1 per cent of the total available water resources, up from 8.83 billion cubic metres in 2022, the report added.

It is worth mentioning that the indicator 6.3.1 tracks the proportion of wastewater flows from households, services, and industrial economic activities that are safely treated before it is discharged into the environment, according to the UN Water website.
