Egypt rejects violations of Syrian sovereignty, FM tells US envoy

Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty told US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack that a comprehensive political settlement remains the sole path to restoring stability in Syria, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York, Abdel-Atty reaffirmed Cairo’s rejection of any infringement on Syria’s sovereignty or security, and condemned Israel’s repeated violations of Syrian territory. He also stressed Egypt’s opposition to any breaches of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement.

Talks also covered Lebanon, where Abdel-Atty voiced Egypt’s support for the extension of state authority and preservation of national institutions. He denounced Israel’s attacks on Lebanon as violations of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and international law, calling on the international community to back Lebanon’s stability.
