Egypt reviews export rebate programme, economic complexity

Egypt’s Investment and Foreign Trade Minister Hassan El-Khatib reviewed a new export rebate programme on Tuesday, part of efforts to raise the country’s ranking on the Economic Complexity Index (ECI), the ministry said.

El-Khatib said the new scheme was designed as a flexible tool to support exporters, encourage local content, and promote high-value-added industries in line with Egypt’s sustainable growth strategy.

He said the programme would initially focus on engineering and chemical industries, which could strengthen exports and enhance the global value of Egyptian products. Expanding the scheme, he added, would help manufacturers move into more advanced production areas, reinforcing the structure of the economy.

The meeting also discussed measures to improve the competitiveness of Egyptian exports, with emphasis on high-complexity industries, and stressed the need for regular monitoring to ensure alignment between rebate policies and economic complexity goals.
