Egypt, S. Korea strengthen healthcare cooperation

Egypt’s Healthcare Authority Chairman Ahmed El-Sobky met with South Korean Ambassador Kim Young-hyun to discuss improving healthcare cooperation and services under the Universal Health Insurance system, the Cabinet said on Wednesday.

El-Sobky stated that the meeting included discussions on establishing a strategic partnership with the Korean national health insurance system (NHI) to exchange expertise in treatment and insurance systems.

Additionally, they explored linking the authority with Samsung Medical Centre to facilitate knowledge exchange in hospital management and medical technology, as well as the development of healthcare systems and medical training.

El-Sobky further explained that a roundtable discussion would be organised to identify opportunities for joint cooperation in localising medical devices according to the actual needs of the market.

This initiative will be coordinated with relevant government entities and will involve collaboration with the Korean private sector keen on investing in Egypt, according to the statement.

He also revealed that a Korean investment delegation will visit Egypt in September. The authority will host them and organise a tour of healthcare facilities in the governorates where the Universal Health Insurance system is implemented.

El-Sobky noted that collaboration with the Korean side will involve sharing expertise in artificial intelligence and virtual hospital system development through an advanced technological platform. This will enhance citizens’ access to healthcare services and improve the quality of medical care with advanced technological solutions.

Furthermore, he discussed cooperation in medical waste management and promoting green transformation in health care to achieve environmental sustainability and support Egypt’s vision of a sustainable health system.

El-Sobky discussed improving cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in crisis management, health emergencies, and enhancing emergency medical services quality through specialized training programmes for health personnel.

This collaboration strengthens the national role of the authority in delivering high-quality medical services to citizens and supporting health services for refugees and residents in governorates where the system is implemented.

Ambassador Kim Young-hyun appreciated the current cooperation with the authority and expressed support for expanding the partnership with Egypt in health care and medical technology.
