Egypt seeks to localise battery industry in talks with Scatec

Egypt’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat met with executives from Norway’s Scatec to discuss expanding cooperation in renewable energy, including energy storage systems and localising battery production, the ministry said on Saturday.

Talks reviewed progress on Scatec’s green ammonia project with Misr Fertilisers Production Company (MOPCO), as well as solar and wind ventures. Esmat confirmed the timeline for a 1,000-megawatt solar power plant in Nagaa Hammadi with 200 megawatt-hours of storage, due to connect to the grid next year, and a 900 MW wind farm in Ras Shukeir slated for 2027.

The minister stressed that localising the production of renewable energy equipment and batteries is a priority for Egypt’s electricity sector, adding that large-scale battery storage is essential for grid stability and reliable supply.

Talks also touched on government incentives to attract investment, technology transfer, and opportunities to export locally produced renewable energy equipment to Africa and the Middle East.

Esmat said Egypt’s clean energy transition strategy is being advanced in partnership with private investors, who play a key role in supporting the country’s solar, wind and storage ambitions.
