Egypt seeks to put Iqat gold mine on global production map

Egypt is pressing ahead with efforts to position its Iqat gold mine in the Eastern Desert as a significant player in the global gold market, according to the Ministry of Petroleum’s statement on Saturday.

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Karim Badwy met Sherine Helmy,CEO of Wealth and Resources Mining Co., on the sidelines of the Africa Down Under conference in Perth, Australia to review development plans for the concession. The Cairo-based company has been operating the site since 2016.

Proposals include the construction of a carbon-in-leach plant to process ore and the establishment of dedicated power and water generation facilities. The company aims to draw on Australian expertise as part of the expansion.

Badwy pledged the government’s support to accelerate the mine’s progress in partnership with the Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA), saying the project would soon be placed on the “global gold production map”.
