Egypt seeks to secure 20m tons of wheat

Egypt’s Minister of Supply and Internal Trade announced that the country needs approximately 20 million tons of wheat to meet both private sector demands and subsidised bread production.

The minister emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust wheat reserve and expressed the country’s intention to source wheat from various global suppliers, depending on favourable import prices. He revealed that Egypt’s current strategic wheat reserve exceeds six months but aims to extend it to nine months or more.

The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to secure strategic commodities and purchase large quantities of wheat, potentially from new Russian producers. He praised Russia for its commitment to fulfilling Egypt’s wheat supply agreements and affirmed the high quality of Russian wheat.
