Egypt seizes 7.4 tons of subsidised fertilisers in anti-smuggling raids

Egypt’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Thursday it had thwarted three attempts to smuggle around 145 bags of subsidised fertilisers, equivalent to 7.4 tons, intended for sale on the black market in Luxor and Kafr El-Sheikh.

In Luxor, authorities seized 52 bags of nitrogen fertilisers from a trader, including 47 bags of ammonium nitrate and five bags of urea, during a coordinated campaign by the Agriculture Directorate and the Supply and Internal Trade Directorate. The confiscated stock was reported to the authorities, and the case was referred to the Public Prosecution for investigation.

In Kafr El-Sheikh, officials foiled two additional smuggling attempts, seizing 56 bags from one vehicle and 40 bags from another, all reportedly destined for illicit sale. Legal procedures were initiated, and the Public Prosecution was notified.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk said the seizures demonstrated close coordination between the ministries of Agriculture, Supply, Interior, and local governors. He warned that any official found negligent or complicit in facilitating fertiliser smuggling would face strict accountability.
