Egypt showcases social protection efforts in meeting with EU human rights envoy
Egypt highlighted its widening social protection efforts and regional humanitarian role on Thursday during talks with the European Union’s Special Representative for Human Rights, the Ministry of Social Solidarity said.
Social Solidarity Minister Maya Morsy met with EU Envoy Kajsa Ollongren and her accompanying delegation at the ministry’s new headquarters in the new capital. Morsy welcomed the delegation and emphasised what she described as deepening cooperation between Egypt and the European Union.
During the talks, Morsy outlined the government’s flagship anti-poverty initiative, the Takaful and Karama cash-transfer programme, which she said has reached nearly 8 million families over the past decade and currently supports 4.7 million. She also described the ministry’s work in elderly and disability care, economic empowerment, and child welfare.
The minister highlighted Egypt’s growing role in regional humanitarian operations, pointing to the Egyptian Red Crescent’s efforts in delivering aid to Gaza and its support activities in Sudan.
Ollongren, for her part, praised Egypt’s initiatives and said she hoped to broaden cooperation in the months ahead, the ministry said.
