Egypt, Siemens discuss expanding energy cooperation

Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly met executives from Siemens on Sunday to discuss expanding cooperation with the German company in electricity and transport, the Cabinet said.

Madbouly praised Siemens as a strategic partner, noting that the three power plants it built in the New Administrative Capital, Burullus and Beni Suef supply about 35 per cent of Egypt’s electricity needs, rising to 42 per cent in winter. He also highlighted the company’s role in the country’s high-speed electric rail project.

Electricity Minister Mahmoud Essmat said coordination with Siemens continues on operating the existing plants and exploring new projects.

Ashraf Hamasa, Managing Director of Egypt Siemens Energy, called the Egyptian market “highly important” for the company, while Waheed Abbasi, Siemens’ head of gas services in the Middle East, said the company was working to improve gas efficiency at the plants and had trained Egyptian staff to manage operations.

Siemens reaffirmed its commitment to long-term cooperation with Egypt and to sustaining efficient operation of its power plants, the Cabinet added.
