Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met with Siemens Energy officials on Wednesday to discuss expanding cooperation in power generation, integrating advanced technologies, and accelerating the energy transition.
Held on the sidelines of the Egypt Energy Show (EGYPS 2025), the discussions focused on scaling up renewable energy projects, cutting carbon emissions, and leveraging digital transformation to enhance operational efficiency.
Key topics included the ongoing modernisation of power stations, particularly the Burullus Plant, where two gas units are being upgraded with new technology to reduce natural gas consumption by 30 per cent. They also explored the potential integration of hydrogen co-firing in existing gas turbines, using a demineralized water-based hydrogen production unit, aligning with Egypt’s green hydrogen strategy.
Additionally, officials reviewed the feasibility of using seawater for power generation and identifying suitable locations for such projects as a cost-effective solution.
The meeting also addressed the rehabilitation and capacity enhancement of power stations in Damietta, Kureimat, Nubaria, and Ataqa, along with the development of a 500 MW wind power project.
Siemens Energy’s role in maintenance programmes, occupational safety plans, and workforce training was emphasised, with a focus on preventive maintenance, spare parts coordination, and digital integration to optimise plant performance and emergency response.
