Egypt signs gas, oil agreements with Syria

Egypt has signed on Monday two memoranda of understanding with Syria to supply gas and petroleum products and provide technical support to its energy sector, reinforcing Cairo’s ambition to position itself as a regional energy hub.

The agreements were signed followed a meeting between Minister Karim Badawy with a high-level Syrian oil delegation led by Ghiath Diab, Syrian Deputy Minister of Energy for Oil Affairs.

Under the first memorandum, Egypt will supply gas to Syria via Egyptian infrastructure for power generation, including floating regasification units and gas transmission networks. The second focuses on meeting Syria’s needs for petroleum products.

Egypt also agreed to provide technical expertise to help rehabilitate Syria’s gas and oil infrastructure, the Egyptian petroleum ministry said, describing the move as support for the “brotherly Syrian people”.

The ministry said Egypt was ready to leverage its technical capabilities and logistics infrastructure, citing the country’s role as a hub for trading both fossil and non-fossil energy.

The latest agreements follow a memorandum signed with Lebanon in Beirut earlier this week and a previous deal with Cyprus to connect Cypriot gas to Egyptian facilities, part of a broader push by Cairo to expand regional energy cooperation.
