Egypt signs MoU with World Food Programme for food security, supply systems

Egypt has signed a memorandum of understanding with the World Food Programme (WFP) to expand cooperation in enhancing food security and social protection systems, covering the period from March 2026 to June 2028. The agreement was finalised on Tuesday during a meeting between Sherif Farouk, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, and Rawad Halabi, Director of WFP – Egypt Office.

According to the Ministry of Supply’s statement, the MoU establishes an institutional framework for technical cooperation aimed at developing food supply systems, improving the efficiency of essential goods supply chains, supporting the Wheat Flour Fortification Programme (Premix), and enhancing quality assurance mechanisms. It also focuses on advancing food assistance programmes and strengthening data and information management to support decision-making in line with the national food security and nutrition strategy and Egypt’s Vision 2030.

Farouk highlighted that the ministry manages one of the largest food assistance systems in the region and is continuously working to improve efficiency, governance, and sustainability. He described the partnership with WFP as a key developmental initiative for transferring expertise, building institutional capacities, and refining operational and oversight systems, ensuring stable availability of essential goods across all governorates.

The minister clarified that the MoU provides a general cooperation framework, with specific activities and programmes implemented through separate work plans agreed upon by both parties, detailing outputs, timelines, budgets, and responsibilities to ensure transparency, execution efficiency, and achievement of results.
