Egypt signs partnership to boost phosphate manufacturing

Ferchem Egypt, a subsidiary of Polyserve Group, has signed a framework partnership agreement with the state-owned Egyptian Company for Mining Resources (ECMR) to develop phosphate manufacturing projects and boost value-added production, the petroleum ministry said Tuesday.

The agreement, witnessed by Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawy, includes plans to establish a phosphate fertiliser plant and a facility to upgrade low-grade phosphate ore for industrial use. The partnership is part of the government’s strategy to enhance the mining sector’s contribution to the economy and increase exports of processed raw materials.

Badawy said the initiative “reflects Egypt’s drive to maximise the added value of its mineral wealth” and highlights the state’s efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships in key industries, particularly fertilisers and mining.

The deal is expected to expand Egypt’s downstream phosphate production capacity and support its ambitions to become a competitive exporter in the global fertiliser market.
