Egypt signs train maintenance, upgrade contracts with Spain’s CAF

Egypt signed on Thursday three contracts with Spanish rail company CAF to rehabilitate and maintain Cairo Metro trains, in a deal the government says will boost local production and support its push for sustainable transport.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir said the agreements cover the overhaul of 39 trains on Line 2 and the maintenance of 23 trains on Line 1. The work will be carried out in Egypt with more than 95 per cent local labour, financed in Egyptian pounds through the budget of the National Authority for Tunnels.

The contracts include plans to localise the production of spare parts in Egypt. The rehabilitation will extend the lifespan of the trains by at least 20 years, while a 10-year maintenance programme for 62 trains across the first two metro lines aims to cut breakdowns and improve service reliability.

The signing coincided with the state visit of Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia to Egypt and the Egypt–Spain Business Forum, highlighting growing cooperation between the two countries in transport and industry.

On the sidelines of the forum, El-Wazir met Spain’s Secretary of State for Trade María Amparo López Senovilla and CAF Group CEO Javier Martínez Ojinaga, where both sides reaffirmed the strength of Egypt–Spain ties and underscored the importance of expanding cooperation in transport and industry.
