Aswan’s governor Ashraf Attia confirmed on the 25th of April that Egypt will build a new solar energy station with a capacity of 500 megawatt (MW) in Kom Ombo, Aswan.
The station will be located on an area of 10,000 m2, and will be implemented over 18 months, Attia added. It is set to begin pumping its production into the unified national electricity grid in September 2024.
The new Fares solar energy project will offer around 2,000 job opportunity during the construction period. This goes in line with coordination between authorities to ensure the success of the solar power station establishment process, Attia added.
Egypt has built the Benban solar power park in 2018 with a 1.8 GW total capacity, which is the largest solar power park in the world.
The Egyptian government has been working on expanding renewable energy sources since 2014, and has partnered with development banks to attract investments in this field.
