Egypt to launch €300K water security project in South Sinai
Egypt is implementing a €300,000 rain harvesting project in Wadi Feiran, South Sinai. The project is funded by the Inter-Islamic Network on Water Resources Development and Management (INWRDAM) in partnership with the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (SIDA).
The initiative seeks to enhance flood protection and water access for Bedouin communities, with future solar-powered agricultural developments for project sustainability, as reported by the Egyptian Cabinet on Wednesday.
Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, highlighted the Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy (NWFE) as key to meeting Sustainable Development Goals, especially regarding water.
The Nexus aims to harmonise desalination, solar power, and resource management to address water and food challenges in Arab and African regions.
Sewilam proposed collaboration between Egypt, Jordan, and Morocco under the Action for Water Adaptation and Resilience (AWARe) initiative for a trailblasing solar-powered desalination project. The produced water would support intensive food production under the Nexus concept, while the leftover high-salinity water could be used for cultivating brine shrimp (Artemia).
