Egypt has launched a comprehensive plan to rebuild its long-dormant North Sinai research station in Sheikh Zuweid as part of efforts to revive agricultural research in border regions, the Desert Research Centre (DRC) said Monday.
Hossam Shawky, head of the DRC, visited the station alongside Vice President for Projects Mohamed Ezzat to oversee the launch of the project, which follows directives from Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk to restore research activity in strategic areas.
The reconstruction, to be carried out by leading state contractor Arab Contractors, will bring the facility up to modern standards after years of inactivity due to security concerns. The plan includes refurbishing agricultural greenhouses, upgrading basic infrastructure, and restoring full research operations.
“The Sheikh Zuweid station is vital for supporting desert agriculture and preserving genetic plant resources in North Sinai,” Shawky said, urging swift implementation and full technical and logistical support for the station’s research teams.
The facility is expected to serve as a regional hub for environmental and agricultural development, supporting local farmers with research-based solutions and contributing to wider state efforts to develop and stabilize the region.
