Egyptian authorities will partially reopen the Rafah border crossing linking Gaza with Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on Wednesday and Thursday, a Palestinian official has said, describing the move as “almost certain.”
He said the move was aimed at allowing Gaza residents stranded on the border with Egypt to return to the blockaded Palestinian territory.
“Information about the reopening of the crossing will be confirmed when Egyptian authorities contact the Palestinian side,” Maher Abu Sabha, the head of Gaza’s border authority, said in a statement.
The Anadolu Agency could not immediately obtain comments from the Egyptian side regarding Abu Sabha’s remarks.
Some 6,000 Palestinians are currently stranded on the Egyptian side of the border with the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Interior Ministry said Thursday.
Egypt closed the Rafah border crossing, Gaza’s only access to the outside world, on October 24 following an attack on a military site in the Sinai Peninsula that left 31 Egyptian troops dead.
