Egypt to roll out new plastic currency starting 2021: Amer
Egypt will print new polymer EGP 10 ($0.63) and EGP 20 (1.27) banknotes as planned earlier starting next year, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) Tarek Amer said, noting that the new banknotes won’t replace the original paper money.
The new plastic currency will be manufactured out of polymer, which will result in more durable and cleaner banknotes, the CBE governor explained.
Amer also added that the new currency is cheaper to produce and said that the move will reduce counterfeiting, adding that the new notes will be issued after the government moves its headquarters to the New Administrative Capital east of Cairo.
