Egypt, UN launch initiative to enhance sustainable food systems
Egypt signed a joint programme with UN agencies to enhance sustainable food and nutrition systems and support national efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The initiative aligns with Egypt’s Vision 2030 and the National Climate Change Strategy 2050 (NCCS).
Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat stated that the programme supports the National Committee on Food and Nutrition Systems and integrates with the Egypt-UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (2023–2027).
The initiative aims to enhance institutional capacities, strengthen financing and partnerships, and improve data access. A steering committee, co-chaired by the UN Regional Coordinator and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will oversee implementation.
Moreover, the programme is expected to boost cooperation among the government, UN agencies, the private sector, and financial institutions, reinforcing Egypt’s leadership in sustainable food systems.
Al-Mashat highlighted Egypt’s commitment to food system transformation, ensuring sustainability through capacity-building and financing. A UN-led coordination mechanism will facilitate dialogue and investment.
