Egypt, UNDP sign MoU to advance inclusive, sustainable economic development

Egypt signed a new memorandum of understanding with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Tuesday, aiming to strengthen cooperation on economic development, evidence-based policymaking, and private-sector engagement.

The agreement was announced following a meeting between Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat and UNDP Resident Representative Chitose Noguchi. They discussed joint initiatives under Egypt’s Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF), the preparation of the upcoming Human Development Report, and the 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Al-Mashat highlighted the long-standing partnership between Egypt and UNDP, noting that the current 2023–2027 country programme aligns with national development priorities and supports inclusive, sustainable growth. She commended UNDP’s work across 45 projects covering climate action, clean energy, digital transformation, SME support, women’s empowerment, social protection, and food security.

Noguchi said UNDP remains committed to supporting Egypt in mobilising catalytic financing, including debt swaps and blended finance initiatives, and advancing SDG localisation and South–South cooperation.

“Together, we are fostering innovative approaches to crowd in private financing and achieve long-term development impact.” the UNDP official said.

The MoU also aims to enhance institutional capacity, facilitate public–private partnerships, invest in human capital, and improve living standards in vulnerable areas. Both sides emphasised scaling up clean-energy projects, operationalising the INFF, and strengthening Egypt’s regional development role by sharing knowledge and solutions with African and developing countries.

The agreement, Noguchi said, marks “a significant step forward in strengthening institutional capacity and fostering innovative solutions for sustainable development.” She added that UNDP will ensure that Egypt “gets the needed support in designing and implementing projects that maximize SDG impact and contribute to structural transformation.”
