Egyptian actor Mohamed Sobhi to return in new play

Renowned Egyptian actor and comedian Mohamed Sobhi has shared the poster for a new play that he wrote and will be directing and starring in.

The play, titled Khebetna, was written in 2004 and production was postponed several times.

The play has been modified to better suit current events, and was planned to be released as part of the Masrah Lel Gameea project (Theatre for All), which was also launched by Sobhi.

The play features the Estudio Tamseel (Acting Studio) troupe.

The play is reportedly inspired by the book by Francis Fukuyama titled The End of History and the Last Man, which argues that liberal democracy is the final form of government on a global scale, and is where the evolution of social systems reaches its end.

The play is also informed by the work of British-American historian Bernard Lewis, whose work “traced fault lines that define the modern Middle East, such as sectarian divisions, the rise of radical Islamists and entrenched dictatorships, some backed by the West,” according to an obituary by The Washington Post.

Sobhi is a comedian turned activist, whose career started in the 1960s.

The television series Yawmeyat Wanis, which he wrote, directed and starred in, ran between 1994 and 2013 with a total of 300 episodes.

Sobhi has acted in over 10 films, including Al-Karnak (1975) and Hona Al-Qahera (1985).
