The Egyptian military has killed 65 militants in operations in the cities of Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah in North Sinai, according to an official statement released on Friday.
The military has been fighting a militant insurgency, which includes the IS-affiliated Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis, in parts of North Sinai for several years. Hundreds of troops and militants have been killed in the violence.
In October, a spokesman for the Egyptian military announced that the army had gained “full control” over the areas of Arish, Rafah and Sheikh Zuweid after successful raids on “terrorist strongholds” and weapons caches.
