Prominent Egyptian gynaecologist and author Mohamed Abul-Ghar won the State Nile Award in Science and Advanced Technological Sciences on Sunday.
“It is the state’s recognition of scientists’ efforts in advancing the nation and building the new republic and knowledge economy,” said Minister of Higher Education Mohamed Ashour when he announced Abul-Ghar as the winner.
Abul-Ghar is currently a Cairo University Professor at the Faculty of Medicine. Abul-Ghar started Egypt’s first-ever centre for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) with a group of doctors.
The 82-year-old received the Egyptian National Award for Scientific Excellence in 1999 and an honourary membership of the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology in 2004.
He also received an honourary membership in the International Federation of Fertility Societies in 2000.
His most famous books are Egyptian Jews in the 20th Century, The Egyptian Legion, and The Pandemic that Killed 180,000 Egyptians.
