A Cairo criminal court ordered the release of Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, the sons of former president Hosni Mubarak, pending investigations on charges of illicit gains.
The defendants, who are accused of using their father’s presidential power to acquire wealth, would have to pay LE 1 million bail each. They are unlikely to be released as they are both serving four year jail terms for embezzling state funds earmarked for the renovation of presidential palaces.
On 21 May, Gamal, Alaa and Hosni Mubarak were sentenced to four years in jail for embezzling LE125 million earmarked for the renovation of the palaces.
The three were also fined LE125 million and ordered to reimburse LE21.19 million to the state treasury.
The two brothers are also on trial on several other corruption cases.
The men have been in jail since 2011, after an uprising that put an end to their father’s 30-year rule.
