Egyptian, Ethiopian, Sudanese Panel to Pursue Technical Studies on Renaissance Dam

Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and  Irrigation, Mohamed Abdel Motleb, said that the outcome of technical and ministerial meetings of the eastern River Nile countries that were held last week in Khartoum, have reached an agreement stipulating that it was necessary to have a no-more-than-one-year timetable framework for the panel’s work on the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, said the Minster, adding that the timetable starts promptly after the panel’s formation and ends after only one year since the start of its works.

The agreement was based upon the range of the additional complementary studies that have previously been recommended by the international expert committee entrusted with probing the Ethiopian Renaissance Dam’s effect on the River Nile downstream countries, said the Minister.

Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan have already been growing closer to forming a committee that will follow recommendations put forth by the experts’ panel regarding the construction of the controversial Renaissance Dam in Ethiopia.

The three countries managed to narrow their differences following two rounds of negotiations after the release of a report by the International Panel of Experts, which assessed the impact of the dam on downstream countries.
