The Arab Penal Reform Organisation, which advocates for prisoners’ rights in Egypt, has filed 20 lawsuits against the minister of interior demanding his dismissal and imprisonment for not abiding by court rulings which awarded compensation to victims of torture in Egyptian prisons.
The organisation issued a statement on Sunday saying that the value of the compensation in the 20 cases amounts to LE350,500 (approx. US$51,000).
Earlier this month the organisation won a legal case against the ministry of interior on behalf two former political prisoners, Mohamed Sherif Mohamed and Mohamed Abdel Aziz, for torture they endured in prisons prior to the 25 January revolution in 2011.
