Egyptian oil firm uses AI to boost production in W. Desert

Egypt’s General Petroleum Company (GPC) has leveraged artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance production in mature fields in the Western Desert, aligning with directives from the Ministry of Petroleum and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) to expand modern technologies, as per a Petroleum Ministry statement.

Chairman Mohamed Abdel Meguid said AI models were used to track stratigraphic traps in aging fields affected by natural depletion, helping identify untapped oil and gas accumulations.

The approach was applied in three fields, leading to the drilling of the SWS-55 well, which began production last October at around 4 million cubic feet of gas per day, exceeding half a billion cubic feet in total output.

A second well, GPY-25, recently recorded initial test production of 1,400 barrels of oil per day and 1 million cubic feet of gas, with preparations underway for full production. Abdel Meguid noted that these results highlight the potential of Egypt’s mature fields, with AI-driven exploration uncovering new resources.
