A police officer has been detained after he allegedly murdered the uncle of a woman whose family rejected his marriage proposal, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.
Prosecutors in Damanhur on Tuesday ordered his detention for four days pending further investigation.
The police officer proposed to the woman, who works in a dental clinic in northern Delta Beheira governorate, but her family rejected him, initial investigations show.
He then went to the woman’s workplace, where a quarrel took place between them.
The woman’s uncle intervened, prompting the police officer to shoot him dead and injure the woman.
Angry citizens demonstrated in front of the local police station, demanding justice for the murdered man, and prompting the officer’s arrest.
Egyptian police have recently been involved in a number of controversial abuse cases, prompting critics to fear a return to the police state which existed prior to the January 2011 uprising.
Last week, prosecutors ordered the arrest and detention of three low-ranking police officers after a video surfaced of them in a morgue taking selfies with a suspected criminal who had been killed in a shootout with police.
The interior minister ordered the suspension of the three officers and their referral to a disciplinary committee.
