Egypt’s Assiut Oil Refining Company (ASORC) has begun implementing a 10-megawatt solar power project, funded by a grant from the European Union (EU). The generated power will cover 10 per cent of the plant’s annual electricity consumption, according to the Egyptian Cabinet. The project is part of the company’s commitment to enhancing energy efficiency and promoting renewable energy sources to protect the environment.
In addition, the company plans to launch an industrial wastewater recycling project, expected to save 2 million cubic metres of Nile water annually, reduce operational costs by $1.5 million annually, and protect the environment. The treated wastewater is currently used to irrigate jojoba plants within the facility, eliminating external discharge and providing both environmental and economic benefits.
To improve industrial efficiency, the company has upgraded the cooling fans of Distillation Unit 1, increasing airflow and reducing vapour emissions. This enhancement is anticipated to recover 125 tons of butane gas monthly, saving approximately $720,000 annually.
Furthermore, the company has connected its furnace chimneys to a continuous emissions monitoring system in cooperation with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, ensuring adherence to the highest environmental standards.
