Egypt’s strategic commodity reserves cover at least 6 months – minister

Egypt’s strategic reserves of key commodities are sufficient for at least six months, with some supplies nearing a full year, Supply Minister Sherif Farouk said following a Cabinet meeting on Sunday.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly, reviewed the country’s stockpile position and measures to safeguard market stability amid ongoing regional pressures.

Madbouly said close monitoring of reserves helps maintain adequate supply levels, stabilise markets, and contain price volatility. He added that the government is also prioritising fertiliser availability, subsidy governance, and support for farmers.

Farouk said reserves of essential goods, including wheat, rice, sugar, cooking oil, pasta, and meat, remain at “reassuring” levels, supported by proactive state measures to secure supply chains and mitigate external shocks.

Agriculture Minister Alaa Farouk outlined preparations for the 2026 wheat season, focusing on boosting domestic output and reducing reliance on imports. Measures include expanding wheat collection points, offering incentives to farmers, and streamlining procurement processes.

He added that fertiliser distribution is being closely monitored, with extended disbursement periods and the use of digital tools to improve efficiency and curb misuse.
