Egypt’s cultivated land expands to 10.44m feddans in 2023: CAPMAS

Egypt’s cultivated land area increased by 0.8 per cent to 10.44 million feddans in 2023, up from 10.36 million feddans in 2021, according to latest data released the country’s official statistics agency CAPMAS on Monday.

Breakdown of Cultivated Land Distribution for 2023

The Delta Region occupied the largest share of cultivated land, with 6.6 million feddans, representing 63 per cent of the total.

Upper Egypt contributed 3.1 million feddans, accounting for 29.4 per cent.

The Urban Governorates accounted for 0.7 million feddans, or 6.7 per cent of the total.

The Border Areas, including regions such as the New Valley, represented 0.1 million feddans, equivalent to 0.8 per cent.

Arable vs. Non-Arable Land

  • Arable Land constituted 9.4 million feddans, making up 89.6 per cent of the total area, and was utilised for farming activities.
  • Non-Arable Land covered 1.0 million feddans, representing 10.4 per cent of the total area. This land was allocated for purposes such as housing, public utilities, damaged or unusable lands, riverbank erosion, and railway tracks.

Ownership and Regional Details

Privately-Owned Arable Land

  • The total privately-owned arable land declined by 2.0 per cent, falling to 7.6 million feddans in 2023 compared to 7.7 million feddans in 2021.

Regional Breakdown:

  • The Delta Region accounted for 4.8 million feddans, or 63.8 per cent.
  • Upper Egypt comprised 2.3 million feddans, representing 30 per cent.
  • The Urban Governorates included 0.4 million feddans, or 5.5 per cent.
  • The Border Areas contained 0.1 million feddans, equivalent to 0.7 per cent.

Government-Owned Arable Land

  • The total government-owned arable land increased significantly by 12.7 per cent, reaching 1.8 million feddans in 2023 compared to 1.6 million feddans in 2021.

Regional Breakdown:

  • The Delta Region accounted for 1.1 million feddans, representing 62.9 per cent.
  • Upper Egypt included 0.5 million feddans, or 26 per cent.
  • The Urban Governorates had 0.2 million feddans, making up 9.5 per cent.
  • The Border Areas held 0.03 million feddans, accounting for 1.6 per cent.
