Egypt’s ECA pushes for smoother EU trade amid sweeping customs reforms

Egypt’s Customs Authority (ECA) is looking to deepen cooperation with European Union countries, highlighting progress in digital customs systems and incentives to boost trade efficiency, it said on Wednesday.

ECA Chairman Ahmed Amawi held an open dialogue with trade and investment advisers from EU embassies, stressing Egypt’s commitment to “building bridges of cooperation and strengthening relations with international partners.” He described the EU as a strategic partner, particularly in trade, investment, and economic development.

Amawi outlined ongoing reforms, including the expansion of the ACI pre-registration system for maritime imports, broader application of risk management tools, and incentives under the Authorised Economic Operator Programme to widen participation. He also highlighted efforts to expand electronic payments, licence general customs warehouses, implement an AI-driven system for classifying and evaluating goods, and integrate the NAFEZA digital platform to streamline and unify import-export procedures across all ports.

“Through these initiatives, we aim to facilitate trade, stimulate investment flows, and combat smuggling and illegal commercial practices,” Amawi said.

EU representatives welcomed Egypt’s reforms, praising the modernisation of the customs system and the NAFEZA platform, noting its positive impact on trade and investment flows between Egypt and EU member states.
