Egypt’s El Wazir chairs meeting to discuss rezoning plans, support for manufacturers

Egypt is taking decisive steps to bolster its industrial sector, announcing plans to rezone the Harash area in Al-Bayadiya, West Qantara in Ismailia, from agricultural to industrial use. The move aims to streamline the existing industrial presence, where 16 factories currently operate haphazardly amidst residential and agricultural zones.

A specialised committee, comprising representatives from the General Authority for Industrial Development and the General Authority for Reconstruction and Agricultural Development Projects, will oversee the rezoning and formalise the status of existing factories.

The decision, announced following a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development, Kamel El-Wazir on Monday, also addressed key concerns raised by major industrial players.

Qalaa Holdings Eyes Expansion:

Qalaa Holdings has requested 15,000 feddans of agricultural land for expansion into agriculture and agricultural manufacturing, focusing on herbs and aromatic plants. Potential sites in Sahl Albaraka and Abu Zaabal are currently under review. The Egyptian Mineral Resources Authority (EMRA) will also assess Qalaa’s request for access to quarries and mines for essential raw materials like talc and kaolin.

Export Fee Concerns Addressed:

Gold Sky, a plastic cup and container manufacturer, voiced concerns over rising export analysis fees imposed by the National Food Safety Authority. Minister El-Wazir has mandated a meeting between Gold Sky, the Authority, and the General Authority for Industrial Development to review the fees and alleviate the financial burden on exporters.

Electronic Invoicing and Market Regulation:

The Ministry of Finance’s push for electronic invoicing to enhance transparency and governance was also highlighted. Minister El-Wazir called for a detailed memo to combat tax evasion and the influx of certain imported goods, to be submitted to the Prime Minister.

Ismailia Industrial Zones to Receive Power Boost:

Industrial investors in Ismailia’s first and second industrial zones reported disruptive daily power outages due to limited electrical capacity. A collaborative effort between the Canal Electricity Distribution Company and Ismailia Governorate will establish a new power supply station to meet the growing demand.

These initiatives reflect Egypt’s commitment to fostering a robust and competitive industrial environment by addressing key challenges and providing strategic support to manufacturers. The government’s focus on streamlining operations, promoting transparency, and ensuring adequate infrastructure underscores its dedication to driving sustainable industrial growth.
