Egypt’s El-Wazir witnesses 1st production of Colway plant

Egypt’s Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport Kamel El-Wazir witnesses the first production of internal components for railway sleeper cars by the Colway factory.

El-Wazir highlighted that the factory, which is being developed in two phases, plays a key role in Egypt’s strategy to localise railway industries, according to a Cabinet statement on Monday.

The first phase, now operational, includes a 3,000-square-metre facility dedicated to producing interior components for trains, locomotives, and public transport vehicles requiring refurbishment.

The second phase will see the construction of an additional 4,000-square-metre facility to expand production and supply components for new railway manufacturing plants in Egypt, the statement added.

He highlighted the financial advantages of renovating current railcars, stating that refurbishing costs only €329,000, which is about 22 per cent of the price of a new sleeper car at €1.5 million, with 70 per cent of expenses in Egyptian pounds.

The renovations include upgrades to seating, flooring, windows, curtains, air conditioning, and exterior painting, ensuring improved passenger comfort and modernised service, as per the statement.
