Egypt’s FM backs UN efforts for Syria political solution

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel-Atty met UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen in New York on Sunday to discuss prospects for reviving a political settlement to the conflict, the foreign ministry said.

Abdel-Atty praised Pedersen’s six years of work on the Syrian file and underlined Egypt’s support for cooperation with the United Nations to advance an inclusive political transition representing all Syrians. He said Cairo remains committed to preserving Syria’s unity, territorial integrity and security, while stressing the need to maintain counterterrorism efforts to restore stability.

The minister also condemned Israeli strikes on Syrian state institutions following the Suwayda events, calling them a violation of sovereignty and a breach of the 1974 disengagement agreement that threatens regional stability.

Egypt stands ready to work with Pedersen to achieve a settlement that preserves Syria’s sovereignty and meets the aspirations of its people, the statement added.
