Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) on Tuesday hosted a conference on adapting fertiliser production to meet the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a move seen as critical for safeguarding one of the country’s most exposed export sectors.
Fertilisers account for more than 46 per cent of Egypt’s exports affected by the CBAM, which covers 6.94 per cent of total exports and 21.8 per cent of shipments to the EU, GAFI said in a statement.
The event, organised in cooperation with government bodies, industry associations and private sector representatives, addressed regulatory readiness, environmental sustainability and green manufacturing practices to keep Egyptian producers competitive in overseas markets.
Talks focused on Egypt’s national action plan, CBAM reporting requirements, testing and inspection standards, and the role of renewable energy in supporting compliance and competitiveness.
The conference ended with calls for stronger public-private partnerships to modernise the chemical sector and ensure exporters meet European market standards.
