Egypt’s GAHAR, university hospitals council step up cooperation on accreditation

Egypt’s General Authority for Healthcare Accreditation and Regulation (GAHAR) said Monday it is deepening cooperation with the Supreme Council of University Hospitals to expand quality standards and accreditation across the country’s health system.

GAHAR Chief Ahmed Taha met Omar Sherif Omar, secretary-general of the council, alongside senior officials including Ahmed Anany, dean of Zagazig Faculty of Medicine, to discuss efforts to bring more university hospitals under the universal health insurance system.

Taha said university hospitals provide 76 per cent of Egypt’s tertiary care while also training medical professionals, calling them the “backbone” of the sector. So far, 15 university facilities have received accreditation, including 10 hospitals, two laboratories, two medical centres and a primary care unit.

Since its establishment, GAHAR has run 28 training programmes for more than 5,500 staff and delivered 139 technical support initiatives such as site visits, remote assistance and design reviews.

The officials agreed to accelerate accreditation work through intensive training and continuous technical support, which Taha said would ensure safe, sustainable services aligned with international standards.
