Egypt’s state-owned General Petroleum Company (GPC) has completed a series of electricity interconnection projects in the Eastern Desert and Sinai that have slashed fuel consumption and carbon emissions while improving efficiency, the petroleum ministry said on Tuesday.
In Ras Gharib, GPC connected its Eastern Desert fields to the national power grid, shutting down gas turbines and saving about 730 million cubic feet of natural gas annually. The project cut emissions by 22,000 tons of CO₂, the ministry said.
The company also tied the Ras Sedr processing station in Sinai to the grid, replacing diesel generators and saving 24,000 litres of diesel a year, with a 70-ton cut in emissions.
GPC further completed the first phase of linking the Esh el-Mallaha field with Magawish Petroleum Co, using flare gas to generate electricity and eliminating the need for diesel generators. The project saves 108,000 litres of diesel annually and cuts emissions by 315 tons.
Upgrades to supply Kuwait Energy enabled the shutdown of 23 diesel generators, saving 1.08 million litres of diesel and reducing emissions by 3,145 tons each year, according to the statement.
The ministry said the projects underline GPC’s role in advancing energy efficiency and sustainability in Egypt’s petroleum sector.
