The Egyptian government’s healthcare expenditure is projected to increase to 617.9 billion Egyptian pounds in the 2025/2026 budget, a 124.3 per cent rise from the 275.5 billion spent in 2021/2022, as per a Cabinet statement on Monday.
The cost of treatment covered by the state has increased sixfold over ten years, reaching 27 billion pounds for 2.4 million citizens in 2024/2025, compared with 4 billion pounds for 1.1 million people in 2014/2015.
Egypt’s health insurance beneficiaries reached 54.2 million in 2025, up from 46 million in 2014, while allocations for health insurance support increased over eightfold to 5.9 billion pounds, the statement added.
It is noteworthy that government health expenditure reached 7.2 per cent of total public spending in 2022, up from 4.2 per cent in 2014, while Egypt’s Universal Health Coverage index score improved from 65 in 2015 to 70 in 2021.
