Egypt’s imports drop 12.5% in ’23 – CAPMAS

Egypt’s total imports declined by 12.5 per cent in 2023, reaching $84.2 billion compared to $96.2 billion in 2022. Non-petroleum imports fell by 12.2 per cent to $72.6 billion, while imports of petroleum and electricity dropped by 13.3 per cent to $11.7 billion.

Intermediate goods accounted for the largest share of imports at 36.3 per cent, followed by non-durable consumer goods at 17.9 per cent, fuel at 14.6 per cent, and capital goods also at 14.6 per cent.

Key import categories saw notable decreases, including iron and steel (down 11.6 per cent), plastics (down 28.3 per cent), wheat (down 11.0 per cent), and pharmaceuticals (down 2.0 per cent).

China remained Egypt’s leading supplier, contributing 15.7 per cent of total imports at $13.2 billion in 2023, down from $14.8 billion in 2022. Saudi Arabia ranked second, accounting for 6.6 per cent of imports, with a total of $5.5 billion, a drop from $7.9 billion in 2022.
